welcome

Throughout the year we run a range of classes. This year, these take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays,  Fridays and Saturdays.

Tuesday Class

This art group grew out of the original beginners class, founded almost five years ago by Brian Moon, pictured above.    Now, it is pitched at intermediate to advanced artists, although novices are STILL WELCOME, and will not be disadvantaged in any way.

All the sessions are tutor-led, and Brian has found some great tutors for the coming year.

The classs continues to meet on TWO TUESDAYS each month. New members would be very welcome; you do NOT need to be an accomplished artist to join, but will soon become confident with the assistance of the tutor and the friendly atmosphere within the group.

If you are interested, please ring Brian on 01670 515663; he will be happy to explain in more detail the aims of the group and its future programmes. Brian can also be contacted on e-mail at  brian1moon@btinternet.com

Wednesday Class

Local Morpeth & Stannington artist, Jan Szymczuk , (pictured above) is taking Wednesday morning Basic Drawing Classes in the Studio.
Starting date: 9th February 2011, 10am-1pm, £10 per session, throughout the year.

Have you ever wanted to be able to sketch a friend or loved one, quickly, easily and with confidence, to capture a reasonable likeness? Jan will teach you all the basic pencil skills, contruction lines, shading (cross-hatching) and other drawing techniques so you can confidently sketch faces, attempt figurative portraiture, animals, caricatures etc. Whether as beginner wanting to learn the first steps, or even a competent artist, wanting to improve your pencil work or a painter wanting to improve your rough sketching, all are welcome, and hopefully, you will find something worth scribbling for.
All you need to start are some pencils and a sketchbook, please bring these along if you have them. Don't be put off if you haven'd any - these will be provided for the first week or so.
Bookings can be arranged directly with Jan on either 07711766573 or 01670789890 or via e-mail at

The Friday Group

The Friday class, run by Harry Rose, (pictured above) is a self contained group within the arts centre, and was set up in 2004
Its members’ aims are to develop their enjoyment of painting and drawing, and also to support the Coquetdale Arts Centre.

Since the Art Centre’s studio is limited in size, (up to 14 people working can be comfortably accommodated), this group’s membership also has to be limited. This problem has been addressed by the setting up of the Notifying List. People interested in attending an ordinary workshop or a tutor led session are notified when there is a vacant place. A list of the tutor led workshops showing dates, tutors, subjects and media is given to all members and people on the Notifying List so that they can decide in advance which sessions they would like to attend.  This is a convenient arrangement as there are often vacant places during the Summer. Requests to attend any workshop (ordinary or tutor led) can be made through the chairman   Harry Rose tel: 0191 2584041.

Ordinary workshops cost £6.00 to notifying members; and tutor led days cost £12.00. There are no half days.

Members bring their own materials, although there are some basic materials in the studio that can be bought from the Arts Centre at a reasonable price.

Meetings begin at 10.00am and end about 4.00pm. There are facilities for tea and coffee in the studio, and members either bring a packed lunch or buy something in Rothbury.

The Friday Group committee has four members:

Harry Rose – main contact.
Noreen Pattie
Ros Stewart
Edith Marshall.

Saturday Classes

These sessions are open to all, whether members of CAC or not. The classes cost £20 for the full day from 10am - 4pm.   Pre-booking is essential as all classes are limited to 14 students. Only cancellations received three weeks or more before the class date qualify for a refund.

The Gallery has a small supply of basic materials, but most artists prefer to bring their own. The Saturday classes are self-contained sessions.

Most of our one day courses cater for all abilities. Many very experienced artists regularly attend all our classes, but all our tutors have made it clear that they are happy to welcome beginners. We aim to help people enjoy various aspects of Art in an informal and comfortable environment.  Tea and coffee are available throughout the class. There is usually a lunchtime break of around one hour, when lunch can be purchased in Rothbury, or a packed lunch eaten in the studio.

PLEASE NOTE: the classes listed below can be booked from Saturday 17th/Sunday18th March 2012, when the Gallery is open to take in work for the new season. Please do not write in to book before then, as there will be noone picking up the post, and your cheque could go astray. Many thanks for your cooperation.
